Water Heater Myths & Misinformation Blog #6

Traditional Water Heaters

In this blog series, we will explore some of the common water heater myths and misinformation that customers frequently call to talk about.

Myth #6 – “I turn off my electric hot water heater when I go away for the weekend (or overnight) to save money.”

Turning your water heater off results in very little energy savings. Electric water heaters are well insulated so that they retain heat for a long time to prevent heat loss. This heat loss is called standby watt loss in electric water heaters.

Instead of doing turning your water heater off, try turning the temperature down while you are away as this will not interrupt the functioning of your water heater, but it will result in energy savings by having your water heated to a lower temperature when it is not going to be in use.
