Let’s talk about thermal expansion tanks.
Expansion tanks are actually quite small in size, but their function has a very large impact in the home. As water tanks heat up, thermal expansion causes the water pipes to expand and contract, which creates tiny weak points and wears down the pipes over time. Thermal expansion tanks absorb the expansion water created when the water tank heats up, which helps extend the life of the tank and the house plumbing. Newer homes do not require expansion tanks because they are built with floor drains so that expansion water can continually run off into the drain from a special valve, but in older homes where this isn’t the case, tank manufacturers highly recommend this addition for preventative safety.
