Every manufacturer assigns a special serial number to each water heater that is built. The serial number can be used to determine the warranty validation and age of your water heater. Below is a list of how to decode some common manufacturer serial numbers.
Bradford White manufactured water heaters also includes the brand name JetGlas.
Bradford White uses a 20-year letter designation rotation in serial numbers. Water heaters manufactured 20 years apart will have the same serial number or “letter year” designation (i.e. A = 2004 and 1984).
Year of Manufacture
(1st Letter of Serial Number)
Month of Manufacture
(2nd Letter of Serial Number)
Example: Serial No.GH9560506would have been built in August 2010.

GSW manufactured water heaters include the brand names Moffat, Superflue, and Medal.

1.) When looking at the serial number prior to 2004 the serial numbers were read this way.
3) Between 2004 and 2007 the format for the serial numbers were read this way.
The 6th digit of the serial number represented the place of manufacture.
3.) 2008 and Later The new format for the serial numbers was implemented. There is no longer a reduced warranty for Newfoundland.

Rheem manufactured water heaters include the brands Aqua Therm, General Electric, Hotpoint, Professional, Vanguard, and Western Auto.
The serial numbers on all Rheem water heater labels contain ten digits and follows the example below.
Example: Serial No. 1209D01234 would have been manufactured in December 2009.

As mentioned above, General Electric water heater serial numbers are decoded in the same way as Rheem serial numbers. (The first 2 digits indicate month of manufacture, and the second 2 digits indicate year of manufacture.)

For AO Smith water heaters, including the brands National, Glascote, and Perma-Glas, the first 2 numbers in the serial number indicate the year of manufacture, and the second 2 numbers indicate the month of manufacture.
Example: Serial No. BG99-0813397-210 would have been built in year 99 (1999) in month 08 (August).

American Water Heaters also include the brand names Super-Flo and Whirlpool.
To decode this serial number, look at the first 4 digits of the serial number. The first 2 digits indicate the year of manufacture, and the second 2 digits indicate the week of manufacture.
Example: Serial No. 9906xxx would have been made in the 6th week of the year 1999.
